Perseverance is a choice in commitment to keep on keeping on, no matter what obstacles life places along our paths.
One of the greatest examples in my life of true endurance and dedication was my Mom.
She grew up in an orphanage for many years and then a foster home, until she turned eighteen and was able to live with the family of a friend. She had no true family connections, her life depended completely on her, until she met and married my Dad. She truly was a pioneer of sorts, given the times she lived in back then.
Yet in spite of such a difficult and challenging beginning, she never quit, gave up, or felt sorry for herself. She went on to raise a family of four children, worked very hard, and no matter what life oppositions came her way, she always continued to keep moving forward. This the beautiful inheritance she left with me…the piece of her that continues to live on within me and keeps me going when those difficult moments cross my own path.
Perseverance takes stamina, patience and a strength to endure, as well as a belief that the road we are traveling is worth every effort. Each of these characteristics can only come from a deeply ingrained faith and trust, knowing God is walking with us and here to get us through any challenge or hardship we will come against.
God gives us the power to get through the seemingly impossible places we find ourselves in, through the gift of His son, Jesus Christ, who is the strength that dwells within each one of us. It is His strength that allows us to push against the forces of life that try to disable us; it is His strength that allows us to persevere in the most trying of circumstances.
My Mom’s determination to never give up came from that deep place of faith she held in her heart, finding all she needed to keep pushing through and overcoming a life that was full of many hard knocks.
Life here on earth will always have its troubles, stumbling blocks, and challenges to work through, but as long as we pull Christ’s strength from within us, we will be able to persevere through all things and continue on our life’s journey moving from one step to the next.
For only in persevering will we truly reach every blessing that God has prepared for us, while finding the joy in a life well lived and fulfilled.
Collisions 1:11 “being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience,” NIV
